Day 6 : Lattice Star
Today's design is based on a lovely French button circa 1815 - but in yellow. I think we all need a bit of sunshine at the moment!
Name: Lattice Star
Type: Thread wrapped & woven
Materials: Domed wood button mould No. 82 (25mm) / No 8 Perle cotton
Source: The original of this button can be found on a cotton coat ca. 1815, currently held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Accession No 1983.93.1. The coat is French, and as the coat is cotton, it is likely that the button is worked in cotton or linen. I would speculate that the original button mould is bone, which would allow the coat to be washed. The design is very similar to the much smaller 'Wash Star' buttons often found on Victorian and Edwardian shirts and undergarments. Instructions for the Wash Star can be found in my book, Buttons: A Passementerie Workshop Manual
